Last night's Doula Tea was amazing! Dr Corrie Marinaro of New England Naturopathic Health joined us and discussed adrenal and thyroid gland health. With today’s culture of fast food and fast life, this is an incredibly important topic.
When your mind and body perceive or experience stressors – physical and/or mental - such as lack of sleep, lack of proper nutrition or lifestyle change, your adrenal glands kick into overdrive. They secrete the hormone cortisol to 'keep you going' though these time periods. With the excess cortisol, your thyroid gland jumps in to regulate your basal metabolic rate or resting rate. This can create hypothyroid or hyperthyroid. With hypothyroid your system is slowed down. You may experience a decreased appetite, constipation, dysmenorrhea, dry skin, hair loss or depression. The opposite of this would be hyperthyroid which speeds things up. It can cause insomnia, palpitations, increased appetite, loose stools and anxiety. These symptoms can be found in everyday life and can increase for expectant and new moms. Their nutrition is shared, their sleeping schedules up heaved, and they are entering a whole new way of life whether they be a stay at home mom or a working mom. There are so many changes that can be ‘stressful’ and amazing all at the same time! How to manage - Eat Real Food!!! This sounds very basic and is often left by the wayside when life gets busy. Whole foods that are as local and as organic as possible are the best option. Fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole grains are all great choices. There are many healthy eggs, dairy products and meats available as well. Be sure to get plenty of whole food iodine in your diet, a great source of which would be ocean vegetables. There is also a variety of wonderful herbs your naturopath could recommend. Rest and Relaxation!!! Again, this sounds very basic and is often forgotten. Take the time to slow down. Meditation is a great way to slow down physically and mentally. Do a puzzle, read a book, paint a picture – anything that is for you and just let’s you put aside your busy schedule. These are just a couple of helpful hints along the way to proper adrenal and thyroid health. It is the simple things in life that make the most difference so be aware of your environment, be aware of your eating habits and be sure to take time for you!
